Default Oil change interval - I'm at 5,500 oops

Well we got the 2007 V50 at the end of September and I thought that they changed the oil when we got it but from reading their windshield sticker and the mileage when we bought the car, it is not so.

This will be the first oil change and my best estimate is that there is @5,500 miles on the oil. Did thy use syn or dino? I do not know.

We won't be able to get an oil change until next weekend and will put another 300 miles on it.

The manual says oil changes every 7,500 --- therefore I feel we are withing a safe buffer.

Ya think?

my bet is your car is already using synthetic - simply by judging from the mileage interval but what's in the car doesn't matter - just plan on using a high quality synthetic from now on :-) . Newer cars now predict the change interval based on driving style - and its not uncommon to see 10,000+ miles on a change for newer cars - so there's even a buffer built into the 7500 mile recommendation (my '12 VW CC has a 10K interval). With the longer change intervals you should still check the oil regularly, not only for fill, but for color & feel (Volvo recommends every 1500 miles/2500 km for checking the stick). If you look under the hood on top of the radiator shroud you'll see a sticker with an oil can icon advising of the weight (ie 5-30 or 0-30) and grade for your oil (turbos are bit harder on oil than NAs). If you drive hard (ie tow, live in the mountains, or have extreme temps you should consider using a broader weight like 0-40. If you are going to an indy shop, see if the use OEM (Mann) filters and ask what brand oil (Volvo "recommends" Castrol but there's a full range of brands that meet the car's specs) - to me, its worth the extra $5 they may charge.

300 + or - makes no difference. What is the total mileage? How has the oil level been while you were driving? Did it drop at all, or has it been steady? What color is it?

With a "new to me" 2007, my worry would be more for the timing belt, and after that, transmission flush. The battery may soon be timing out about now as well, along with the motor mounts. Oh yes, the "environmental filter."

+1 on no big deal. With a recommended 7,500 interval you are easily in the safe zone. I change every 5K for several reasons, but I don't sweat it if I go 500 over and I change as close to the next 5K on the odo as possible which may mean the next oil change comes at 4,500 miles. In addition I run synthetic which at 5K is overkill, but I drive 100+ miles a day and intend to run my cars to 300K+ unless I smack the a$$ of the guy in front of me first
