Default Particulate filter warning light

Hi! I recently purchased a Volvo 50 2D Diesel in Europe and I just got a warning light that the particulate filter is full and I need to do a regeneration. I contacted a Volvo dealership, but I'm scared it will be a lot of money, but is it better to do it at a dealership?

I went to my local mechanic and he said 250 euros ($300) - is that normal?

The warning light went off, but I think it does need to be changed? Thank you for any help!

Default Regenerate equals renew equals swap it.

Guessing intuitively there that regeneration is to put in a new one. Where a high bill comes from that I don't know. I am needing to put a new air filter in as a guess so my mind is on it though in my case it will surely not solve the problem entirely as it probably is prematurely dirty.
