V50 needs fuel pump and control module, $2300 - HELP!
I have a 2005 V50 that won't start. It has 93k miles on it. I had it towed to the dealer, and they told me that the fuel pump and control module need to be replaced, and it will cost $2,300. The PEM recall was done on the car in 2008, but it seems strange to me that the car is having a major problem within the same system as the PEM. Does anyone know if this problem can be related to the PEM recall?
Hi Amy,
I thought I would post to this thread as well. My car had the PEM recall done in 2009 -- and guess what: the PEM has now presumably failed a few years on. I pleaded with Volvo, but they won't do anything for me.
I replaced the FPS in my car (second time) and it eliminated shuddering/hesitation problems, but what remained was atrocious fuel efficiency and apparent 'rich' fuel/air mixture (can really smell it when you back into a parking spot). What's bad? 13.0L/100km on 70% highway driving...on 94 premium... It should get around 9.0L with highway driving. And I haven't been pushing the turbo -- but the revs are dropping down into the 1500 range on the highway doing 80 in traffic, and it just doesn't "feel" right.
If your car was not starting all together, I assume you have bigger issues than I did, and need a fuel pump replacement. Don't go to a dealer for this. Find the part online and get a volvo technician (non-dealer) to do the repair.
The PEM is probably shot in mine. Good news is that for anyone this happens to, the part can be purchased on Tasca for $251 + shipping. Even better news is that the PEM is easy to replace and plug-and-play -- no software needs to be specially downloaded. It's easy to get at (as opposed to the fuel pump) so you could really do this repair yourself.
Hope your repairs went ok!
