Default '01 V70 Trailer Hitch

I have at least part of a trailer hitch already installed on my '01 V70 2.4T.
However, after countless hours of searching on the web, I still cannot find anything that looks like what I have, or any mount bar that looks like it would work with what I have.

Hoping that someone here could identify what I have by the photo. OEM or aftermarket? Any ideas on where to find the other parts I may need?

Thanks
Sean

Wow, I can't understand how that works! The electrical connector looks "loaded for bear" and the rest looks like it would stress out pulling a motorcycle (a small one at that). No help from me. BTW I have an original hitch I installed myself and this isn't close.

Default Ultimate aftermarket-HOMEBUILT

Hello, I bet someone cobbled this one from farm and garden parts. It looks like the hitch you'll find just behind a tractor's seat. It's called the third point. On larger tractors it's adjustable hydraulically to maintain a desired height over uneven ground-depth of cut for a plow, for instance. The hitch I insalled on my 2002 bares a U-Haul tag, sets squarely on two standards each with two bolt holes. It utilized existing hardware-simple and straightforward. "The Book" calls for a Class ll, 1.25" square reciever-which is what I have. If I had to do it over again, I'd install a 2" because there are more accessories out there fitted to 2". BUT: The 1.25" hitch I found was made for my car and legal. IMPORTANT: To anyone who is considering pulling a trailer with a V70-There's a plug waiting to power your tail and brake lights via a Volvo harness. I'll provide the p/n and source if anybody wants it. A woman in a local trailer shop insisted that a $100 black box amateurishly jabbed into the rear fuse block (and left to dangle like garbage) was the only way to wire a trailer. That cow snapped at me when I showed her the waiting plug. Kira

Kira,

Do you have a source for hitch with a 2" receiver to fit an '06 V70 2.5T AWD?

I can only find 1.25"

Thanks,

Vince

Default '01 Hitched installed...

Just installed a hitch on my '01 V70. I agree the picture is something welded together... likely not a good idea (and the rear valance is cut). I installed a Hidden Hitch in the proper mounting holes in about 20 minutes with hand tools. Easy as pie. As for 2", there is no after market bolt on hitch (that I could find) and would be out of capacity for the vehicle. The electrical in the picture is the factory 'plug in' mentioned a couple of times above and this is the connection point for the trailer... only issue in Canada/USA is that most trailers are flat 4 connectors and this is a 7 pin unit... got to make/buy the conversion pig tail. I use the 'black box' and piggybacked it on to the factory plug assembly without any trouble. This gave me the flat 4 connector and no requirement for the 7-4 pin conversion. Have fun!

I'm pretty sure that there are 2" class 2 hitches. I might be wrong, though.

Default 2"er

Hello vfgilber, Sorry, I don't have a source. I found my hitch second hand on Craig'slist. Harbor Freight sells an adapter which inserts into an 1.25" and has a 2" receiver. It's a foot long and mightn't be legal. If you were near Northern NJ I could introduce you to a guy who has a big stock of hitches from which you could fabricate. Of course, that might not be prudent. Happy hunting. Kira

I'm trying to get a 2" receiver to use with my bike-rack. The 1.25" size just seems to flex and sway too much.

One of my neighbours has a factory hitch with a 2" receiver on his 2003 V70 so it must be possible to get a used one somewhere. In fact, I might try to buy it from him seeing as I've never seen him with a trailer or toy.

Any idea if a factory hitch off a 2003 V70 2.4 would fit a 2006 V70 2.5T AWD?

I installed the factory hitch and it was quite easy, but did require notching the plastic part of the bumber. I did this in 2004 and the dealer price (I did negotiate), was competatively priced.

The dealer hitch quote I got was MUCH more expensive than the Hidden Hitch I got. Also need to be careful: the factory hitch (at least in Canada) seems to have a round receiver which really limits other applications.

Default Hitch Mystery Solved

I've finally solved the mystery. I crawled under the car with a flashlight and discovered a little sticker on the hitch that said VOLVO. Had a part number on it as well. I called the local dealer and they confirmed it as a Volvo hitch. Problem is, the part I'm missing, the 'receiver'(shown in the attached image as orange) is NOT sold separately - even though it's just bolted onto the bar!! I'd have to buy the whole frame assembly, which I already have!

Total cost from Volvo would be $552.

Thanks for the replies to my post and the attempts to help me out in this. If anyone knows where I can find the receiver portion (shown orange)that I'm missing, please let me know.

Thanks again,
Sean

If it were mine, I'd go to a good hitch shop, buy a receiver and have them weld it to the existing parts. The only issue might be the nonsensical positioning 0f the electrical connector - it might interfere with the locking pin on a conventional receiver. Can it be moved?

Not surprized at the "we don't sell parts - give us $500+ for a whole unit" attitude - seems to be typical of Volvo
