100K service
Hello, You didn't say which car you have, what year it is or if any other work had been done to it. In the case of a P2 5 cyl. Volvo with a 105K timing belt interval a dealership near me referred to that service as "a big one" and had a posted $1,100 price. For this they'd change the belt, tensioner and idler, change your oil and filters, lube the body parts (locks, hinges etc.), look at your brakes, toss a can of fuel injector cleaner in the tank and maybe fill your washer reservoir. I can't remember anything else. Perhaps flushing brake and P/S fluid was included, though I doubt it. Check at a dealer-just ask for all the details. They probably have a sheet already printed. If a Volvo dealership still claims the transmission fluid is lifetime give serious consideration to finding a good independent mechanic as they are treating you like a fool. Similarly, the best, long life coolant doesn't last beyond 5 years. Thermostats are a maintenance item too. They're good for ~8 years or 125K. I've seen them go earlier. Also, don't be surprised if a suspension part or two has worn out in your 100K. It happens. Check it out and get back to us. Kira

thanks for the reply - it's a V70 2003 with many miles on it. I suspect it needs brakes (and rotors) and other "scheduled work". AM wondering if somethings can wait a bit so I don't have a huge bill (that I can't afford to pay...) Now that you mention it I probably need a thermostat or something similar - air stops working after a while and the same hold true with the heat. Been looking for an independent mechanic but haven't had any luck. Are you in NJ (Hackensack)? I'm close to Philadelphia.

Most dealers sell too many services. Check your owner's manual first. I'd add to Volvo's recommendations that the water pump and the tensioners be replaced if you're doing the timing belt as much of the cost is labor -- cheaper to do it once. Trans fluid, too, which isn't cheap. Don't "power flush" it, either. Have the suspension looked at for bushings, tie rod ends, etc.
The service won't be cheap, but I'll bet your dealer's recommendations are about 30% more costly than Volvo plus what I've listed above.
