2000 V70T - Very strange fuel consumption issue - HELP! :)
Hi all,
Just wondering whether anyone has a solution to a strange problem that I've encountered with my 2000 V70T. I've searched endlessly on various forums, and while a few people have described the same problem, no-one seems to know of the cause or a fix.
Here's the deal.
At highway speeds, my fuel economy seems fine, averaging around 8-9 lt/100km. Further, the instantaneous reading seems to do what it should at this point. However, the car averages between 15 and 18 lt/100km in the city - not at all fine. By looking at the instantaneous reading, I can see the reason.
The problem arises when the car takes off from idle. It'll initially read 99.9lt/100km (I'm aware it's normal to give a high reading initially given the load), but it "locks on" to this reading for anywhere up to 10 or so seconds - in other words, while the car is comfortably cruising at 60kph. Strangely, the problem doesn't occur when the car takes off from a very low speed, only after coming to a complete stop.
The car also seems to lack some power at lower speeds - this has been improved somewhat with a recent Xemodex ETM rebuild, new valve body and transmission overhaul (yep, it's been a costly few months..), but it's still not right. I've also recently replaced the MAF sensor so it's not that.
I know that these two issues aren't normal - my dad has an '03 XC70 and they behave TOTALLY differently.
Any ideas? The fact that it "locks" at such a rich fuel level only after idle makes me think it's some weird software glitch. Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated!
Cheers,
Andrew

In my case, while the performance improves once the engine is warm, the strange fuel economy issue continues no matter how long I've been driving. I'd understand it if the problem only occurred when cold (i.e. O2 sensors) but in my case it just doesn't make sense.
Incidentally, this problem doesn't seem to just affect V70s - I read a post somewhere about the same issue on another model but can't recall which.
Anyone have any experience with this problem? I'm going to book it in for a software reload soon, but if it's something else I don't want to waste my money.

My 2009 v50 is doing the same thing. I was told I needed a new Cat converter which I spent over $2k on. Now it's reading high when I take off and sits over 50 for a bit then comes down. I was told I didn't need to replace the o2 sensors just the Cat Converter as that's what the diagnostics said. I'm wondering if I should have done the sensors anyway
