In the past I have always put Pirelli P6's on this car (235/45R17) but find I am lucky to get around 20,000 miles out of them even though I rotate every 5K and aligment is dead on. They also seem to ride rough and loud especially after tread is less than 50%. I live in the Southeast so snow and ice are not usally an issue plus I am not an agressive driver. I also tow a small boat (approx 1200lbs) from time to time with the car.

Anyone have any tire suggestions for when I replace the Pirelli's? I have read good things about Continental ExtremeContact DWS and the price is right! But have also heard that with these wagons the Pirelli's are the only tire that wont rub on wheel well when cornering hard in parking or very tight turn situations.

Hello, You want more than 20,000 miles out of a set of tires? I sure would. The P6 seems an odd choice for a passive driver. There aren't many 45 series tires out there; and they're "all" performance bent. I found the Bridgestone Turanza with Serenity tire fell woefully short of its warranty life on my pedestrian 2002 V70 base (195-65-15). I'd give any Continental tire a try. You can change the steering stops if ever you have a rubbing problem. That only a Pirelli tire won't rub sounds like a false statement to me. Kira

 

Got the same size tire on my 03 V70.
Installed Generals, treadwear # is 380.
They rub but not bad at all.
Note
The higher the treadwear #, the longer the tire will last.

 

I have the same model and year and had the same frustrations with tire wear. For my current set of tires I tried Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum and have been really happy with them. I have 20k miles on them so far and it looks like I should get at least another 20k out of them. Traction is good and road noise is better than anything else I have had on it. They have a very similar performance profile to the P6's but a 600 treadwear rating. Cheaper than the P6's and get better customer ratings on tirerack.com too.

Bridgestone Insignia SE 200s on my 98 v70. They had a high mileage rating (90k) I think. And at 50k on them I believe it. Do great in snow, rain, you name it. Wouldn't want to go 140mph in them, but good tires in my experience.
