I am new to the forum and amthinking of buying a 2004-2006 V70 wagon. Can anyone tell me pleasewhat are the common problems with this vintage? What to check before buying?
Is the 2.4 a reliable motor? Is the turbo ever a problem?
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi, the volvo 5cyl engine design is a long lasting work horse. I still have two 850A-94 N/A with 270kkm and 220kkm on them, pvc system needs to be looked after and kept clean. I've worked mostly with brakes. Some have had problems with air conditioning or abs in this 90s generation. ETM from Magneti Marelli 99-03? should be avoided for sure.
Now I also have v70d5awd-06 but just only 60kkm and is really fun to drive. I coudn't see any reason to go for bmw or audi based on the 850 reliability I've had.

I have a V70R 2004 AWD. The only thing is the car turns like a tank. So being the Shopping Mall rat I am ...it is hard to hit those parking spots with out considerable effort.
The front bumper is very SPORTY but very low. It can catch easily on those parking stopper things....$1500 a pop to replace once you have pulled it lose...I am on my 3rd one. I consider myself a very careul driver. But these things are in the design.
I LOVE the enginepower and the fuel economy. I love the cargo net for my dogs to stay in the back. I love how the car looks and feels.

I have a 2004 V70 that I bought used in 2005 with 16,000 on it
The only problem I have had is with the power steering - the hose carrying the fluid constantly cracks/leaks - I have had it replaced 3 times. My father bought a 2004 V70XC and has the same problem
Other than that and the fact that it seems to "eat" headlight bulbs I can't say anything bad about the car. I am routinely (2 times a month) traveling from RI to MD at 400 miles each way and the car just hums along getting great mileage (I don't have to stop to fill up) It's comfortable, reliable and the dogs can stretch out on the back seat and sleep
I ALWAYS wanted a Volvo wagon - and really loved my father's 1995 850 - I wanted that car but Dad wasn't going to sell it until he got into my 2004 V70 and of course loved it and got his (the 850went to my niece who was rear-ended right after - no injury to her, the other car was totaled and had to be towed away, the damage to the 850 was more than the value so the insurance company totalled it and gave my brother $5K)
When I compare the V70 to my father's V70 XC I will admit I prefer his car - the AWD is great (I had a Subaru before and got hooked on AWD), it is a little higher off the ground than the V70.
I LOVE IT!
