6-speed Geartronic - mileage

I'm experimenting with my '08 V70 3.2 in this manner:
On Interstates and similar roads, I'm moving from 'D' to '6' to prevent downshifts on minimal grades, especially when in cruise mode.
The elimination of short downshifts from 6 to 5 that is unavoidable in 'D' can be eliminated. The presumption being, as long as the motor is not "lugged", the all-too-common downshift does two things. Unnecessarily wears the trans in the down and returning up-shifts. And, engine revs are reduced, presumably reducing gas consumption to a small degree, preventing the 6/5 downshift and accompanying motor rev-up that comes with it.
Your thoughts?
