Default 98 V70 Battery

Hello all.
This might be a duplicate but anyhow.
My wife's 98 V70, seems as having a dead battery.
Found one that Pep Boys made by Bosch, that I might be picking it up tonight.
I noticed however on the picture of the new and remember the existent one, having caps on it as in the old days or motorcycle batteries.
Is that unigue to Volvos and can a regular sealed battery be used?
Thank you as always,
Anthony V.

Not an expert, but it should be as simple as looking at battery compatibility chart.

I'd be more concerned about the cranking amps and copacity. I've put cheaper Wal-Mart batteries, Sam's Club batteries and others in my Volvo's. I think Volvo uses Interstate or something like that. Heck, I'm thinking about going to the junk yard for one in a few days.

Hello, Hey avarvarigo, the group # for the underhood batteries is 48. I think Sears and others call it an "import size" on some of their charts. Do remember that the cells of a battery are separate. If you find one with 6 caps you have to check each one from time to time. Avoid any "Maintenance Free" battery. It's a fact of life that water is driven out of a battery occasionally. Replace with distilled or deionized water only. In a pinch seltzer can be used. I knew a guy who's battery had the more common pair of flat strips with each covering 3 cells. He's remove one of them and check the level; assuming the acid would level out. His battery had 3 nearly bone-dry cells. I never put a quart of water in half a battery before that. Kira

hello all. to be on the safe side, i looked at sears on the web and they were showing motorcycle batts for my volvo. when i called, they said a sealed batt would do for about $160.
so i checked with Pep Boys and got a BOSCH with the removal caps, looks exactly as the old, and cost me about $120. put it in and it started right up. if anything we are "legal" again....so we don't have any unpleasant
surprises due to a possible wrong batt etc...
thank you all and enjoy the holidays.

PS.
i checked, as i had done in the part the level on the old battery and it was still good. so the battery was probably going anyhow. came with the car when we bought it a couple of years back and of course i checked the new one too just in case...
