Default Air Mass Sensor issue in V70 2.4 turbo

Trying this again, as it did not show in V70 forum last time.

I replaced the Air Mass Sensor on my 1998 V70 X/C AWD 2.4 Turbo a year ago, with an OEM part. 20,000 miles later, and the sensor isn't working. The car has been driving very well, but yesterday, after a short drive, it wouldn't start. I disconnected the sensor and the hose and vacuum hose just beneath it and checked them. When I reconnected them the car still wouldn't start, but it would start with the sensor disconnected. Later, I removed the sensor, checked it, changed the air filter and checked the connecting hoses. When I put the sensor back in, the car started normally. Today it started and ran as normal for a 90-minute drive, but wouldn't re-start unless I disconnected the sensor. When it was running, re-connecting the sensor instantly killed the engine.

Does this sound like a typical Air Mass Sensor failure, or is it possible that the computer needs to be re-set? Why would the sensor fail after only a year? Is there anything to be done other than buy a new sensor? Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks for any advice.
