Default AWD Reliability

I know that this is a V70 forum, but members here have much more experience with AWD Volvos than in the 850 forum as AWD 850s were never imported into the U.S.

I am looking at a 97 850 AWD, turbo with 5sp manual. The owner said that he had the angle gear and drive shaft replaced at a cost of $4,500 Canadian. Most of his work was done at the dealer.

This type a repair scares me. I understand that the early (98-99) V70s were basically the same platform as the 850s. If a few of you could chime in regarding your experience with AWD from these years, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!
