Cam/Timing Belt BIG Problem

Cam/Timing Belt BIG Problem
Hello everyone, i'm a bit new to all this, and i have a big problem. I have a Volvo V70 2.5 10V auto, and on Sunday i went out to start it, and all i had was a really bad ticking/clunking noise. At first i suspected it to be a flat battery so i got a jump, and the ticking continued for a little while, then the engine started to turn over but was whining. My son has since looked further into it, and discovered the timing/cam belt had stripped the teeth off itself. when you try start it the crank spins over but the camshafts do nothing. Now my question is this, whats the likely hood of there being damage to to the valves/pistons/bore etc?? i have been told that Volvo themselves designed there engines, so that the valves and pistons could never come in contact with each other in the event of the cam/timing belt letting go?? Is this true?? Please help, cos i am stuck, and need advice on what to do. My son seems think that its game over, and the engine is dead?
Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance

Hi Cathy and welcome to the forum.
These cars have what is called interfierence motors which means that the valves WILL colide with the pistons if your timing belt jumps track. It sounds like maybe your belt failed as you parked the car or as soon as you tried to start it. There is a off chance that things happened at such a low RPM that you may NOT have damaged valves. Maybe they are pressed against a piston and that is stopping the motor from turning over, and caused the crank to strip the teeth off the belt. Mind you that this sinereo would be one of the rare occasions, like 1 in 200, but it is possible.
Have the car towed to a mechanic and let them install another belt and see what happens. Should cost about $350 total but might be worth the check.
When was the last belt replaced?

Cathy,
What's your engine code from your VIN? Are you sure you have a 10 valve engine?
I could not find anywhere if the 10V engine is interference or not. If it is, then your son and Tony are correct; game over.
rspi: there's not 1 in 200 chance; there is 0 chance of un-bent valves if it's an interference engine.

GDog, believe it or not, I have seen a couple of situations where people did miss the bullet. A guy over on MATT's site did about 5 days ago. His wife started the car and the motor sounded bad so she shut it off and called hubby. Hubby went and tried to start it and it ran real rough for a few seconds and stalled. Pulled the belt cover off and found the idler loose and the belt had jumped a few teeth. He took it home, installed a new belt and claims every is fine. I also had a friend that pulled up to a gas station and as she stopped the car stalled. Would not start. Towed it to a shop and the belt was broken, installed a new belt and she was fine. I'm talking about 2 situations in 15 years. Miracles do happen. LOL

No they don't; Jesus hasn't been around for almost 2000 years...

And also, the belt has never been changed, not as far as i know, the service history went back to 1999, (when the car was new) and no mention of any belts at all being changed, and the cars covered 150,000 miles, ferrying kids, dogs, being used as a tow car, towing 2 ton of caravan, so its not done bad. Trusty old volvo!
