Default Cam locking tool?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cam locking tool. It is to be used during cam seal replacement on an engine with variable valve timing?

Thanks for the reply but the search wasn't very helpful. I need a tool that will keep the cams locked while removing and replacing the pulleys (including the VVT hub).

Tech,

The link was interesting. Some sort of tooling which would lock the cams in place with or without sprockets would be the hot setup, though. In the case of the VVT engines, it would be adventageous to lock both cam and sprocket. Do you disagree?

I use the same tool on the VVT motors. If you mark the vvt pulley and motor before removing the belt then mark the sweep of the pulley after the belt is off. Then you will be fine.

Does anyone have any experience with zdmak's tool?

Tech,

Do the VVT units ever go bad? I read elsewhere that they use engine oil pressure. Is this true?

Never tried that brand. But it looks really close to the OEM one.

They do go bad at times but not to much. Yes they use oil pressure to advance and retard timing on the engine.

Assenmacher Specialty Tools Inc. makes a complete kit if you are just wanting to spend some money. I think the kit sells for a little under $900 here is a link to their site http://www.asttool.com/detail_page.p...anf&manf=Volvo

Um... do they leak oil sometimes?

p.s.

Do you bother to lock the crank when changing belts or cam seals?

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, in the instructions download, it indicates that the angle plate doesn't fit some of the later model cars with VVT.

The 5 cylinders ones rarely do. The early S40's are well known for them leaking.

No I do not lock the crank.
