Cooling fan dead?
There is a new noise in my 06, V70R. It sounds like the fan has a bad berring. There is a low whining sound comming from the front of the engine. it doesn't increase with rpm. When you start the car the sound builds from nothing and then stays steady while the car is running. Also, my temp. guage stopped working.......????

This sounds like an easy enough diagnosis. Park car overnight so its cold. Open hood. Start car. Walk to front of open hood. Look at cooling fan while listening. A3 foot long piece of garden hose can be your stethoscope. If the fan starts moving when the noise starts, you probably have a bad fan/bearing. Also check power steering pump and alternator as those can go bad, too, with weird noises. Be careful not to put hose in path of moving parts. The hose helps isolate the source of the noise, but doesn't mix well with whirling fan blades or moving belts. Be careful! Also, A/C compressor, too while you're doing this work. Start with that "off", then turn it on and listen thru you stethoscope.
Fortunately, the turbo (another potential culprit in the odd noise department) is located behind the block.
