2001 V70XC: The message on the LED display is ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED. It is there most of the time but will go away for a while on its own. My mechanic says it means the oil needs changing but resetting the light after oil change does not reset the message. I truly believe my mechanic is wrong and that this message indicates a problem elsewhere. Please, I need some information to go back to him with. Doesn't this message mean some component needs to be repaired? Would any of the diagnostic codes be involved?

The mechanic is right, is a service reminder message to change the oil/filter and comes on every 7500 miles for about 2 minutes every time you turn the car on. This is different from a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, which will come back if you turn it off, but have not fixed the issue triggering the light. Do a search on the procedure to turn it off.
