I've a 2008 diesel V70 estate (bought in Jan this year) & it's just had (Thurs last week) a MOT & service. I've just got an error message "Engine System Service Required". Bearing in mind it was only serviced less than a week ago any ideas why this error message has appeared & what's the likely cause? Is it safe to carry on driving it?

You'll need to get the fault codes scanned. Generally if something is critical/unsafe to drive Volvos will present an "urgent" warning or possibly put the car into limp mode. You don't want to wait too long but it could be something like a fuel filter, a component like the MAF sensor or throttle body is dirty etc, but it can also be something simple like a loose gas cap. Since the car just had a service, it may also be that the shop used after market parts that some model Volvos are sensitive to.
