Default front end speed related rummble & grumble

Hi All, My 98 v70 2.5 has just started a rumble/grumble from the front.

Its speed related, ie taken out of gear it will still remain, and the pitch rises and falls with velocity. So, my trusty mechanic had a look, its not wheel bearings, we dont think its the brakes, has anyone any ideas?? I saw a forum posting suggest engine mount, please help....
The cars only done 84K miles so its a youngster compared to many.

Many thanks for your time and expertise,

Default Keep looking

Hello, Taking the car out of gear removes the motor mounts from the mix. The axles keep turning. Did your mechanic rotate the wheels during his inspection? One thing you can do, even with the little emergency jack, is to swap the tires front to rear and listen for any change. Select a safe route where you can duplicate your trials. Kira

Had that happen to me. Was told not the wheel hub, but turned out to the problem. My noise went away when a new hub was installed.

Agree with previous poster; sure sounds like wheel bearing symptoms...

So how did you mech eliminate that possibility?

Hi gdog, silkhope, and Georgeandkira,

Big thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. My trusty mechanic tried swervy driving to check for tone change in the bearing, there was none, then jacked the front up and tested for any wheel movement (other than round and round), and concluded the bearing was apparently OK.
The noise came on after the 1st long high speed run for 3 months on the first warm day of the year. Does this suggest bearing and/or hub even more??

Cant thank you all enough for your help,

Ulrikaka V70

Your mech's method for finding a bad wheel bearing is wanting IMO. Bearings can make noise before they start to have any excess play in them. And trying to isolate noise sources while going down the road is pretty tough.

See post #2 in this link; that's how I used to do it when i was a tech.
