Default Smelly V70 heaters

Hi everyone, new to the site and Volvo ownership, have just bought a 98 V70 that needs a bit of work, I have to replace the N/S front spring seat which after some excellent advice on here I will tackle as soon as I have the part. The other problem I seem to have is the engine dosent seem to be getting up to temperature, the guage only reads just of the bottom stop when warmed up and dosent move when the heaters are on, th eother problem is the heaters produce a fairly nasty musty damp type of smell when used and the windows keeps misting up even with full heat on, also there isnt much heat coming from them which I would assume is connected to the engine temperature?! Any help with this would be gratefully recieved,

Many thanks Dan.

Hello, 1) Please give mileage and trim level when you post. 2) I know what a front spring seat is but I don't know what an N/S front spring seat is. 3) Do yourself a favor and change the thermostat and the CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor). Everyone changes them at the same time. On both occasions when I changed only one of them I was back in there within 3 months. It makes sense to change (and flush with chemicals, if necessary) your anti-freeze at that time since you're draining some of the coolant anyway. 4) There's a filter underneath the right side of the black plastic cover at the base of the windshield. All you need to do is disconnect the drain hose and remove 2 torx screws and lift up a bit. You don't need to remove the wiper arms. You'll see a hole or a filter there. It'll be obvious how to change a filter-just pick it up. If there's just a hole there an adapter is available which fits into the hole and accepts the retangular filter. That adapter, if there is one, tends to hang onto the cabin air filter when you pick it up. If enough debris has gotten into your intake a little reaching in/disinfectant application is in your future. Make sure the drain hoses for the A/C are clear before you start flushing. 5) Misting up of the windows is a classic symptom of a leaking heater core. The O-rings to the core might be bad but many have had the core go out too. There are postings on how to replace it yourself. 6) Search the other maintenance topics. EXAMPLES: Timing belt and related hardware. Transmission flush. Bevel gear flush (if applicable). 7) Enjoy your new car. Kira

Hi, thanks for that help, will give it a try, just for reference the car has done 186,000 miles and has the 2.0 litre engine. By N/S I meant nearside as in passenger side, and just not to confuse anyone its a right hand drive car as im in England!!
