Default Fuel filter

Hey all.
I recently had my 1998 2.4ltr AWD Volvo (V70) tuned up but as to the fuel filter, I was told that there isn't one to replace as part of the tune up but the one in the tank by the fuel pump. Is that so and how long does it last? My Volvo has about 74k miles on it.
Thank you all,
TV

I'm not sure how long they are supposed to last but I think it's pretty dependent on the gas you put ni and how many impurities are in it. I would say that if it's a '98 and the filter has never been changed, that it's due regardless of the mileage of the car. They are not difficult to change at all. There is a procedure listed on the forum that tells how to deplete all of the fuel in the lines so as to make the job cleaner and safer. Just be sure to get the new one installed in the correct direction.

Hello, My 1999 had a fuel filter just ahead of the RR wheel. Changing it was easy. I would assume a 1998 would have one of the same type. By that I mean a smaller, "in tank", filter smacks of a more modern, money saving design. Give a look. Kira

ok, i thank you both. i'll take a look as time allows.
by the way, i thought that i saw in the back of my 98 wagon a trap door under the carpet, give and take in front of the spare tire area. i wonder if that's how the pump gets replaced, should it go so the tank don't have to be dropped?

That is where it is on mine. I think its secured with about 5 or 6 10mm nuts which are removed and then the plate can be pried up (carefully).

Hello, If you have only one ramp you can put it behind the RR wheel and back onto it. You'll have more than enough room to see what you've got. Usually only one bolt holds the "strap". The connections are the easiest you've ever seen-and they don't leak either. Take a paint marker and put the date and mileage on the filter before you install it. Scale forms and sloughs off the inside of the tank. Some filters can even stop water. In the Winter they can freeze up. Kira

Kira, as always thank you very much for the detail instructions.
I can use those...
As soon as my job is kind enough to me to allow for a day off, I'll give it a go to familiarize myself with location what it looks like for real etc. I should be able to get the filter from the IPD Volvo parts place and get it done...
Thank you again,
Tony V.
