Default Fuel pressure maybe???

the car is a 1998 V70 T5 with 120k. First thing in the morning is starts, runs rough for a second and is fine. If I start it on short trips around town, it starts, dies then the second time I start it it runs fine. If I get in the car, turn on the key, then put on my seatbelt, before I turn the key to start, It starts first time every time.

i suspect the ignition on for a minute alllows the fuel pump to run a second to build up fuel pressure before I start car.

do you think this indicates fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, or some vacuum hose being off? I do occasionally have a fuel smell after starting but not in a consistent or predictable way.

thoughts.

It certainly is suspicious. I have a 98, but I don't think I ever hooked a gauge to it. The 850's, my gauge will not fit them really because the port is pointed at the throttle cable wheel. There's not room. A tire gauge will fit the Schrader valve, but you really need a real fuel pressure gauge on there for this.
