31341542 A new parking brake control unit might require a software download (using a VIDA subscription) to make it actually work. That's going to be difficult for a diyer in your part of the world.

Thanks, I’m just buying the part to give to a garage for them to update the software and fit it.
Though a Volvo dealer parts dept said that 31341542 wasn’t the right part ?
I found that for sale on the internet and checked.
He wouldn’t tell me the right on though !

I’ve just looked in my boot and there’s a black box with 31314152 on it, on the right hand side.
is this the handbrake control module ?

Looks like that is for the park assist - (the module you are looking for looks like it's mounted in the left rear of the car)

Why do you want to replace the parking brake module?

The handbrake stuck on about a week ago for a bit, with a warning light saying “Handbrake service needed”.
I tried it and could drive off; I parked it on the flat and didn’t put the handbrake on - in case it stuck on again.
The garage couldn’t fix it so disconnected the handbrake and there’s a loud beep when I drive.
The garage says a new handbrake control module is needed but didn’t give me a code.

A Volvo main dealer quoted me £330 for a new module; I’ve seen a 31341542 unit on eBay for £18 !

I can see a unit on the left hand side but can’t see a code.
