Hi Steve:
I already answered this in the S70 section. Hopefylly you will not double post to much in the future.
  1. Is it tapping or clicking or knocking?
  2. How loud is the sound?
  3. What year car do you have?
  4. How many miles does it have?
  5. Where did you get it from?
  6. Do you know the service history?
  7. Is there oil in the motor?
  8. When was the last time it was changed?
  9. When was the last timing belt done?
  10. Is there any teeth missing from the timing belt?
  11. Has the motor been replaced?
  12. Do you have any service history?
It is normal for Volvo's to tap a little when first started, especially on cars that have been sitting for a long time. It should go away after a few minutes, 10 max. If it's tapping or clicking longer than that, you likely have a stuck or sticky valve. You may have to remove the intake and spray some valve cleaner in the ports. You can also try to run some Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank, I believe they claim that it also cleans the valves.
