I have recently purchased a '98 V70R which seems to be in excellent condition except for the heater core. I too have notice a similar problem which I attributed to a choke issue as the car reached operating temp. I have only owned the car for about 6 weeks now and take a lot of short trips around town. I thought that the problem would be a one time occurance as the car warmed up but the other night it happened after it had reached operating temp. I believe. So I'm wondering also.

I've got a '98 v70 xc, too. Mine does the exact same thing.
I had asked the stealership what it was a couple years ago and they advised me that the car just 'cycles' and will occaisionally do that. Sounded like BS to me.
I'm in CO and use 91 octane all the time. My guess is that it's a failing O2 sensor. I'm just not sure if it something that requires attention now or if it's okay to keep driving.
I'm about 25k on my current plugs.... I might as well change 'em to see if that helps.

There are, of course, lots of possible causes but for what it is worth, the most common cause of this phenomenon on the 40 series (which I am more familiar with) is a dirty/gunged-up throttle body. A good old squirt with carb cleaner via the long nozzle of an aerosol can provides a cheap & effective cure. Repeat every 20,000 miles.
Hope this helps.

i this same problem (although i have never had a car that didnt occasionally do this). one thing think about when this is happening is whats going on with the weather the cars adjust themselves to work at utmost effeiciency in any environment and if there is a significant change in temperature or sometimes even dry wet they can take a couple of days to "learn" to adapt.remember its just car until you start worrying about every little thing and then i becomes a pain in the ***
