1990 240 Cold Idle Problem (VERY HIGH IDLE)
I posted this here during last winter but didnt get much response, my volvo idles really high during a cold startup, so high i think its probably pretty bad for the engine, and for the gas tank
I've already tried lowering the idle screw but, that cant be it because the thing must be idling at 2-3 thousand rpms, it does this for at least 45 seconds then lowers down to maybe 1.5-2 thousand rpm, and then will go to a normal idle after a couple mintues,
what could be doing this to my car, i'd really like to get it fixed, my dad's 93 volvo doesnt idle anything like this and im 100% certian what is happening is not right
any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jeff

if i remember correctly, i took it off, and the opening was blocked by a metal piece or something, like the valve was closed at the time or something like that, maybe i'll take it off again and spray the **** outta it
alright, i took the thing off and cleaned the **** outta it, not much came out of it and from what i could see it looked pretty clean.
the problem still exists, the only thing i can imagine now is that the part is shot, and from what i've researched this part is priced between 2 and 3 hundred dollars , and must be ordered. Ive even called junkyards but nobody has these cars (good and bad thing i guess!)
Any other options available to me? This sucks, my transmission does not like the hard ****s from Park to R or D due to the high idle. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

can i take the dam thing off and run the car without it? lol, this thing is really pissing me off, mostyly the part about the hard shifts, the thing seems to never reach a normal idle
I had a problem with a fast, erratic idle on my 240DL. The codes suggested that mass air flow meter connection was faulty. I liberally cleaned the contact pins on the top of the MAF with contact cleaner and recoated the contacts with dielectric grase and the rapid idle problemwas solved. Later I cleaned the idle air valve with carb cleaner, but it was not very dirty. I hope this helps. At least for me it was not expensive at all.
Also, some of the earlier 240's have an idle injector that is separate from the fuel injectors. If this is leaky a rapid idle can result.
Finally, I suggest that you look for an air (vacuum) leak that may lean your idle mixture and cause a rapid idle.
Good Luck!
