Immobilizer no signal to ECM Crank no start
2000 Volvo V70 GLT turbo 155k miles One day my key would not come out of ignition until several minutes of jiggling and wiggling. Then it wouldnt go in ignition. Removed ignition switch started with screwdriver then wheel locked up so I put it back together then it wouldnt start at all. Cranking no start. Replaced plugs, coils, cranshaft sensor, vvt, chartged battery still no start. Went to junk yard got another immobilizer antenna and it started right up. Worked for about 2 days codes cleared and then it wouldnt start again. No communication signal from immobilizer. So Im assuming I have a wiring issue either a short to ground or something removed fuse to reset still nothing. Where do I look and how do I check the wires for the signal? What about the ring around the steering wheel is that what communicates with ECM or is it the ring around the ignition?
You have the SWM (Steering Wheel Module) in the column there. The Clock spring is the black ring you're talking about which is the main source of communicating status on airbags, DSTC, Steering Angle, and Immobilizer.
First thing to do is to scan for codes. It will be a dead giveaway for your no communication situation.
Most likely a procedure for calibration of the steering angle sensor, and any other sensor on the column that requires calibration after component replacement will be required.
Parts Cannon in full effect over there, eh?

I haven't had any starting issues but different things would periodically stop working like the instrument panel lights, windows, trunk latch. I tried jiggling the key in the ignition ring (based on a suggestion from some Volve forum), and it temporarily fixed the problem. I have been very careful not to jiggle the ignition lock too much and have been very gentle putting the key into the ignition,. but yesterday I couldn't see the lock and I jammed the key in there and I'm having problems again I tried jiggling the ignition switch again and I got my instrument panel back on, but a window and a trunk latch won't work. Hopefully if I drive a little bit it'll jiggle It back to the right position. I'm wondering if I replace the immobilizer ring it might help or maybe replacing the whole ignition switch/cylinder would be a better safeguard against any kind of sudden failure. I'm wondering if this problem could suddenly cut off engine and brakes? The car is almost 25 years old and these parts get used a lot and probably wear out. Has anybody else tried jiggling the ignition? Perhaps the switch can be adjusted or tightened, one thread mentioned some pins inside the part..
The switch has a bunch of physical contacts in it that are able to turn on various subsystems. You can see how some of them work better and some don't work so well. So replace that switch, not the ring.
