Key fobs for late model Volvos
Need another key or key fob for your Volvo?
Beware of used fobs for late model Volvos (mine is a 2008 V70) that use a fob that you insert into a slot on the dash. Unless the used fob includes the bar code number from the original packaging, the fob cannot be re-programmed. Most of the used key fobs that you'll find on ebay will not include the original packaging so the fob can only be useful as a paper weight. (I paid $12.50 for one and learned all this info too late.
)
Unfortunately, the bar code number is not available to your dealer either. Your dealer cannot retrieve the info using your VIN number or by any other means. The code number is on the packaging that is only included with a new fob....whether it's the two fobs that came with your new car or a replacement fob. A fob with no packaging code is useless.
The aluminum key that slides into the end of the fob will only unlock your doors; it has nothing to do with the ignition. The fob works the ignition. Your Volvo dealer can order another key already cut for you if he doesn't have the equipment to cut it onsite. All Volvo dealers can load the software for keys and fobs.
A replacement key and fob programmed for your car will cost approximately $300 including software.
This info should be a stickie.
