Question Is it my transmission?

G'day - H-E-L-P! I have a 2001 V70 2.5 built in Belgium and I began having what I think is transmission problems about 3 months ago. It was intermittent for a few weeks, but now when I accelerate the car begins normal enough, then suddenly stops then bangs into gear. And when I slow down or stop, the car slows then seems to grab and lurch forward. I’m in bumper to bumper traffic in the DC area and I'm so worried that (1) I will get hit when the car hesitates to gain speed and (2) when slowing my car will lunge and hit the car in front of me. I keep about a 4 foot distance between me and the car in front just in case, but sometimes sudden stops put me way too close to the vehicle ahead. I've had several close calls with my grandchildren in the car. Otherwise, my car drives excellent. Any suggestions out there as to what this problem may be. I can’t continue to pay $900+ for modules which may or may not be faulty as I have in the past. All ideas are appreciated.

Hello, Update the transmision's software at a Volvo dealer if it hasn't been done. Have you changed the fluid using the correct stuff? A cheapie oil change place might not be a wise choise for this service. How many miles on your car? Kira

Good morning and thank you Georgeandkira - I did have the software updated about 10 months ago. I have 140K miles on the car. I have not changed the transmission fluid in the past 5 years. I was advised it was not necessary, but I'm sure that would help more than hurt. I'll start with a fluid change and keep you posted. Regards, T.

Exclamation But, I'm NOT dead Yet

Hi,

I have ACunningham8's same car (V70, 2001, 145k miles) with similar simptoms for now 1.5+ yrs. Gear slippage happens and worsens during continued stop-n-go driving. When the stop-n-go is excessive and/or have additional passanger(s), the simptoms change/worsen to a disapearance of the letter "D" ("Drive") in the dashboard readout with a distinct higher acceleration in rpm and loss of power (I need to press the accelerator a lot just to maintain same speed). The odd thing about reaching this new simptoms is that gear slippage & jumps simptoms stop all together! Pretty smooth ride highway OR city driving, just high rpm.

If I stop for about 15 minutes or so, everything sort of gets reset (acceleration normal, and "D" works fine) after I restart the engine.

I've read of problematic/defective transmissions on the 2001 Volvo V70 that usually happen after 100k miles with repair costs of up to $10,000 for a new trasnmission. What bad luck! I was hoping to reach 200k. The residual value of my volvo is less than $10k. I allways get ripped off at auto repair shops, especially during the current recession in the US... Lately, I just stay away from them, I talk to the car during these "epileptic seizures", and bike to work and elsewhere as much as possible.

A warning signal reads "Transmission Service Required" - it comes and goes. It's annoying, especially during smog check testing because it fails the test on some technicality that have nothing to do with emissions. I have to manually clear the internal computer system and follow certain unreliable procedures.

Since the car works excellent in highway driving, I may have it examined by disinterested diagnostic car transmission specialist before I buy a new car.

The auto decoder gives me a "P1" problem, something to do with a bad clutch/differential.

I'll keep checking this thread for any follow-up. Thanks!!

I have a V70, with about 185K on it. I bought it used (about 5 months ago) for my daughter to drive to college and daycare with the granddaughter, and have been having the same problems that you have, to the T.
It has recently started being difficult to start at times, as well.
I replaced the B4 servo, with no joy. I have not had the transmission software reset/updated.
I am debating how much money I want to spend on the car. The car is nice, full leather and all. But not sure if I need to cut my losses and trade in for something else.
