Hello everyone! Just bought a 99 V70 5 speed non turbo and I have a question..... drove it home from Oklahoma to Michigan 1000 miles and drove great. The car has 102 K on it. It has 2 open recalls - ETS and headlight switch. Well, I get it home pull in the driveway, and you'd think I'm driving a diesel!!! There is one heck of a top - end rattle that is LOUD!! Arrrrg!! It gets worse as you give it gas. I will have it at the dealer on Tuesday for the recall but does anyone have any ideas? Did I blow it up? The oil is fine, a little over half on the stick, never got hot while I was driving it, of course when I bought it it was as quiet as a church mouse. any help or suggestions is appreciated!

I am about 90% sure you have bad oil Pan o-rings.
When the oil gets hot and thin with the bad o-rings some oil flow is limited.

 

Wow, that would make the engine knock? Interesting, now it knocks when ever it wants. I pulled up to a store and left it running it's knocking away, come back out and it's earily quiet again..... also thanks so much for the reply!

Your Welcome but it should be more of a tapping noise than a knocking noise correct?

 

I guess it's tapping but LOUD tapping. It seems to be coming from up top not down low like a rod bearing....

 

Yes then it is the lifters.
If you want to see whats involved in replacing them I made a post about replacing them in the top of the V70 section. If it is not there look in the S80 section.

 

I wonder why they would be loud sometimes and quiet other times? Am I hurting this car if I still drive it?

Not sure why either but it does that.

You might be hurting it slightly.
Lack of oil pressure will wear quicker.
