i have a v70r AWD it ramdomly makes a loud clank noise at about 5-10 mph and there is no drive to the rear axle. i removed the transfer case, it
does not seem to be any visual problems, but i am not sure . one thing i found that looks odd to me is that the ring gear spine freely on the threw shaft. is this normal.

The "transfer case" needs to turn at the speed of the front differential carrier, so it can't connect to the right side axle. The splines need to reach inside the final drive and latch on to the differential carrier.
These cars have a reputation for the splined part itself getting worn out. You can by the little connector that sticks inside the transmission and replace that part.
But the important thing is spinning freely on the right side axle is normal.

after removal of the transfer case and seperating the case the ring gear that deliver power to the rear drive shaft spins freely on the shaft. is that normal. and if not how is that gear fixed to the shaft. this is the shaft that the right side axle slides threw and into the transmission.
