RIP - V70

RIP - V70
My 1998 V70 and I parted ways today - 10 years, 5 months, and 9 days from the day I brought it home. It was a dependable car and never stranded me by the side of the road. Total mileage was 217,456. Total service cost was $15,545.32 for a cost per mile of .0715. It was plagued by the usual problems - a loose tailgate interior panel, an air guide prone to wear and tear, turbo hoses, emissions, and a maintenance light that never stayed off long enough for my satisfaction.Scheduled maintenance visits were expensive and I live in a low-cost area. I can'timagine what the service would have been in a major metropolitan area. At the end, the body was in very good shape but oil leaks were severe. So rather than put $3,000 of work into the car replacing most of the seals and then perhaps looking at other repairs in a year or so, I bought a Honda Fix for my daughters to drive. I do not regret buying the car, it served its purpose. But I suspect that I will not buy another Volvo. Thanks Tech for your advice and responses to my postings over time.

RE: RIP - V70
I know how you feel. I have a Volvo and a Jaguar convertible, and I am always in the V70. And I live in the South where you can drive the convt year round. Its more solid, better road feel, and most important, a better driving position. I don't feel like I am sitting on the ground when I drive the Volvo. 84K on the V70, 24K miles on the Jag, and the Jag is 3 yrs older...how silly is that?

RE: RIP - V70
As a first-time Volvo buyer last week I feel like we just nodded at one another in a revolving door!
Here's my story and I'm sticking to it- at least for now: I've been a car-guy all my life, worked in the industry in a variety of capacities and since at least the late 60's always wanted a Volvo but never bought one until now.
I've owned ALMOST everything else from high-performance muscle cars to Mercedes. I just never got around to buying a Volvo.
I have to admit I'm gunshy about the service costs and quality issues on the little areas like electrical components, body integrity and oil leaks, but I'm totally enjoying the overall ride, comfort, safety, etc. on my new '07 V70.
I've owned a LOT of Toyotas and Hondas in recent years and they have truly been as reliable as a hammer in my experience. I'm HOPING the Volvo can do reasonably well.
But... all of that said... (WITHIN REASON) I'm willing to live with some higher maintenance costs and ****ling quality control issues for the passion inherent in the V70. It's a very different car than a Camry or Accord... and even different than some other late-model Euro-vehicles.
There is, for lack of a better word, "character" about the brand. Always has been and will continue to be at least until Ford sells it to an Indian or Chinese manufacturer (which will probably happen within the next couple of years.)
So... I MAY follow you out the door in a couple of years if the V70 finds itself in the shop too often, but for now I wish you well and I'm looking forward to a "passionate" relationship with a vehicle of "character."
Edited to add... If you look at my sig line you'll see I also ride a Harley- another "character" vehicle with "passion." From a reliability sense my old Kawasaki and Honda bikes were more reliable perhaps- but lacked the "relationship" I have with my Harley. I'm hoping my relationship with my V70 works out as well.
