I have a 1999 V70 w/ 238,000 miles. Got home from work Tuesday night, everything was fine. Wednesday morning, start her up....very rough idle.

Idles rough at 1000rpm, touch the gas, and it moves up to a smooth 2000rpm, and then drops back down to a rough 1000rpm. Put it to the floor, almost gets to 3000rpm. Put it in Drive, and it surges a bit.

Any thoughts??

I am thinking throttle body.....

Hi JT: Do you have a cel? How old are the spark plugs? Could be a number of problems.

 

I am going to clean the throttle body and Idle Control Valve first. The plugs are only a year old. What is a cel??

 

CEL = Check Engine warning light in the dash cluster.

 

check engine and ETS light is on

 

Get the codes pulled and post back. Has the PCV been replaced? Are the vacuum lines in good shape?

 

Pulling codes tomorrow. Cleaned the throttle body so it sparkles. I have no idle control valve in the car. May buy a used Electronic Throttle Module/Throttle body. Could just have total electronic failure.

 

PCV is clean, and vacuum hoses are in good shape

Bought a used Throttle body for $150.00, had 148,000 miles on it. Cleaned it up, put it in my car, attached the battery, turned it to the ON position for 15 minutes......started it up, problem fixed. No CEL of ETS lights came back on. Idle is a little high, 1150 rpm while in PARK.

Do you think I need to go to a Volvo dealer and update software, or will this regulate on its own?

 

ODK, Give it a couple of days, about 100 miles. If it doesn't smooth out go get it checked.

Been about 500 miles......no CEL light, no ETS light. Still running smooth, but idle still around 1200. According to my info console, my mileage is around 24-25mpg, where it was 26-27mpg.

Tune up or software upgrade?
