A and B should be free under the Recall.

C is like $2500.00

Thanks Tech. It looks like I'm gonna be up for a new (or reconditioned) tranny. I'll fidn out for sure tomorrow. Also quite a few electrical probs. I don't think Volvo Australia are paying for the ETMs and software upgrades yet but we'll see.
Any words of wisdom you can arm me with when my mech calls me back?

Not really but if you have to pay for the Throttle body it will be about 1200.00.

Hi, I sent a e-mail regarding ETM warranties in Australia to Volvo Australia,
They said although that Volvo Australia do not have the same warranty as North America , they said that they will look at the ETM problem in Australia case by case..Sounds promising.
New Tranny installed 5K in Australia.... Ive priced it..
I had a jolting tranny, ask them to dis-able the neutral control, and upgrade the software..]
did wonders for my v70 (same as yours)

Thanks i will mention the neutral control when i take it in to get the electronics looked at in a couple of days. My transmission guy told me a new tranny would cost somewhere between 3.5K and 8K but I'm sure I don't need one. (fingers crossed) My transmission runs fine cold. and then it goes a bit nuts when it heats up, hovers in neutral for a second between gears and then slams into gear really hard. I'm taking it to Volvo for some reliable diagnostics. Where did you have your neutral control disabled?

I had the neutral control dis-abled at a volvo dealer (they are the only ones that have the software) It was only $70.00, sounds like your problem is more in depth than mine, i only had a problem when stopping at the lights and then taking off again, the car shifts into neutral when you stop , then engages drive when you hit the accelerator, that is the function i had dis-abled, "neutral control" i would try all the software upgrades first before a new tranny...
Don't stuff around with you local mechanic unless he KNOWS VOLVOS, trust me, volvo will diagnose your problem much faster than him, and perhaps save you money in the long run,

Cool. I didn't buy it from a Volvo dealer but I have it booked into one on Monday. I figured that would be fastest most reliable way to at least diagnose the problem. It was running pretty well today but i didn't let it get too hot either. Its such a tease because its so much fun to drive for about 8 minutes at a time. Do you think it would be damaging it to drive it when it misbehaves like that? Should I try not to drive it until I get it fixed?

I'll let you all know how the diagnosis goes on Monday.

I've got my initial quote of $6000installed for a new tranny from Volvo or $5300 for a reconditioned one ($australian). I've asked them to email me the codes they pulled today so when I get those I'll be back here for more advice. I don't believe I need a new transmission with just under 100,000 miles on the clock. I have no service history though so who knows.

Apparently someone not so competent has attempted to fix my tranny in the past and now it needs to be replaced, along with my MAF, bits of my power steering, bits of my suspension and a long list of things totalling 8-9 grand. There was no change in the drive when i left the dealer but after shifting manually for a while its driving perfectly. I put it back to auto to see if it was still misbehaving but it was fine. I still have my transmission and emmisions messages but it seems to be driving fine. I guess it will need something done to it fairly soon but i'm not going to spend $9K on it while its driving beautifully.

They did delete about 40 codes out of it but they didn't give me any of them. They said the majority of them i can just ignore. Drivers door module for example. Everyhting in the drivers door works fine. They were probably old codes that weren't reset when they should have been. It seems the car has generally been uncared for and serviced carelessly.

Don't be suprised if you need a new tranny... when i called trivett volvo, the service advisor, said it is not out of the ordinary for trannys from that year v70 to fail before 90,000km !!!!!!!! i have 93,000km on mine and i get the occasional flair between 3rd & 4th. i will although get my tranny flushed soon, did they do any software upgrades ?, and what do you mean by it drove ok?, is the problem still there ? , have you tried a tranny flush, your tranny fluid may be dark red and burnt? what did they say about the fluid...? did they check it???

They didn't actually DO anything except delete a bunch of codes. The problem was back for a little while and then went completely and now it just comes and goes at various levels of severity. They kind of bombarded with me with so many things that were wrong with it I didn't know where to start. Do you think a flush is a good place to start? I have no idea. I'm tempted to go to a Volvo specialist mech now instead of back to Volvo.

I would check the tranny fluid my self, the dipstick is at the front of the engine to the right, kind
of between your air box and your block.. (you should be able to see your tranny plate) , its buried right down, it's can be hard to pull the dipstick as it has a metal glasp you must pull/move at the same time as the stick.. if its really dark red and burnt looking
i think a tranny flush may help??? ..i would give it a go! .. if it looks red and still ok..which i doubt. your problem may be more in depth...
but don't go to volvo to flush your tranny, they will charge you about $800.00, they charge a fortune
for the fluid.. go to a tranny specialist but make sure they use the correct fluid..

Call your Mobil distributor for your area. Buy a case of Mobil 3309 (same as the Volvo fluid). Then ramp up the car like doing an oil change, (change oil while you are under there too), and find the tranny plug. Drain out all the tranny fluid (3 quarts). Plug up, put 3 quarts in the small dipstick opening and drive around the block. Do it two more times or more depending on new fluid left.

You will have replaced about 82% of the tranny fluid with new. Cost under $50.

update....

Just got my car back with 4 new mounts,( yes my engine was hanging by a thread) new drive belt, steering stops, torque mount and control arm bushes. along with a transission fluid flush. cost me a crap load but my drive is 100 times smoother. It no longer feels like its going to fall apart when it gets hot. still the occasional dodgy change into 2nd (from 1st or 3rd). I have a couple of litres of tranny fluid left over so i'll flush that thru in a few weeks.

I had the neutral control disabled and the "TOTAL SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO CAN NETWORK" (??) Does anyone know if there are any other software updates I could do with to smooth up the ride a bit more. Would cleaning the throttle body help? ETM software? i need to take it to the dealer to get my messages reset so I'd like to get any helpful software upgrades while I'm there.

Uncle, good to see that you have your car back, and it's going good.
keep the regular servicing up to date, and flush your tranny, once a year or 20,000km
and most of all, talk to her nice, they have ears..LOL
Volvo's are hard to get right, but when you do you should enjoy fine motoring,
even if the wallet is a bit lighter..LOL
If you don't mind what was the total bill??

Total bill was AUD$2500.

After posting yesterday I took it out again to get it washed and have a drive and it started playing up again. After I had it washed it was running fine, in fact better than just after i had picked it up from my mech. As ive stated before it only plays up when it gets really hot. I couldn't get my temp needle vertical no how hard i tried after it was washed, and hence it didn't play up. Could it just have taken a bit of driving to get all the new tranny fluid thru properly? I'm gonna drive it for a couple of weeks as it is, hoping for the best.

I should be happy. Its running like a new car. The thing is i just don't trust it and I'm just waiting for it to play up again. I've had my Mirage for 4 years and it never has a single ****le apart from a flat battery. I miss trusting my car implicitly.

Uncle, I know how you feel, i have posted many a topic on the feeling of not having a reliable volvo.
I have a nissan pulsar which i purchased new in 97, its never given any problems.
We both have the first release (2000) of the new shape v70, after 2002- 03 the reliability improved dramatically.
I also had a subaru forester before i purchased my v70, like the pulsar the subaru drove me over
100,000km with no drama's..
Mate if its giving you that many problems, and you feel insecure about not having a reliable car,
get rid of it, its crossed my mind many a time...cut your losses.
I have my v70 running ok now, i have 3 kids and its nice to know that my family is driving around
in the safest car ever built (VOLVO). I will keep it for now, but i'm always looking....
Good luck with your car....
