Default V70 purchase

I'm thinking about buying a v70. Anything I should be concerned about with this model? What are the typical problems associated with this model?

Are you looking to buy a Gen 1 V70 (1998-2000) or the newer P2 (2001-2007)?

Are you looking at a regular V70 or a V70 Cross Country (AWD)?

The V70XC comes with a low-pressure (LP) turbo.
The V70 came in several versions: Normally aspirated (NA), LP turbo, or high-pressure (HP) turbo (T5 and R). The LP could be either FWD or AWD. The T5 was FWD, the R is AWD

Swedespeed has information on both series.

Gen 1 = http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=104634

P2 = http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=74265

2004-2007 V70R = http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=45546

The first two links should give you the information you are looking for to answer your questions. FYI: As a general rule, stay away from 2001. There were problems with the Geartronic (GT) transmission.

Given your user name I think you had better enjoy tinkering with this car, or look elsewhere.

I have put about 11,000 miles on mine (see signature) and am astounded at the maintenance these cars require. Now, someone will read this and think I have a 'bad' car... not really so.

The 'high failure' items on these cars are legion. They ride well, and are a solid car when running but I have not had to pay as much attention to a car since I sold my MG.

The fact is that I still miss my MG, and would probably miss this one too... but I might be willing to try.

Unless you have another vehicle to drive while you work on it I wouldn't get it. They do look nice though.

I have an 01 V70 T5a with 105K miles on the ticker. The power steering pump leaked within the 1st 10K miles (defective from the factory and replaced under warrenty). Did the ABS thing at 80K miles. A common failure, but fairly easy to fix if you do the uninstall and install yourself and let Vic Rocha fix the electronics. Other than that, she's been a pretty good car. The electonic throttle and the automatic transmission are known weak spots. If the fluid has been changed on the tranny (not on Volvo's maintenance schedule), they hold up pretty good according to others (with only 105K I can't comment yet, but mine shifts perfect). The electronic throttle has Volvo warrenty to 200K or 10 years, shorter of the 2. I think the throttle and tranny were resolved with the 2003 model, but am not sure. Perhaps other know? You should always state the year and model you are asking about, it helps get a LOT BETTER ADVICE!
