V70 T5 Engine Failure
Hi there, whilst I was away serving in Afghanistan, my wife has had an engine failure with our 00 V70 T5. She described the 'syptoms' as follows: she initially pulled off and the car stalled, there was no noise it just stopped. She restarted the engine and drove it approx 50 metres when the engine stalled again, this time it wouldn't restart. When the recovery mechanic arrived the battery was flat so he tried to restart the car with jump leads. Again, the car wouldn't start and now there was also a slight knocking noise coming from the engine. My wife finally managed to get the car towed to a garage who informed her that she required a complete new engine which they quoted her at 2500 euros.
Guys, can anyone shed any light on the problem? I'm seriously missing driving the T5, and can't really afford to spend 2500 euro's on a new engine, so any advice or handy hints and tips would be most welcome. Many thanks. Wayne

Same sort of story as above, though I was in Iraq. All services were completed on a 2001 T5 at the Volvo dealership. T-belt/pulleys, all accessory belts, etc. Wife had to take the vehicle in several times form misfire/stutter and dealer replaced fuel injectors, catalytic converter, sold her on other non-mandatory services. She took it in at 116k miles because it was stuttering again and they told her flat out "You need a new engine". She made it 5 miles from the dealership, at best, when it came to complete stop in the middle of the road.
Dealership cannot tell me why they decided it needed a new engine. They do claim that the oil wasn't changed as required, though looking at the mileage tick up over the time they were working on it, just over 12k over the course of the time I was gone until it failed, and that they were recommending everything under the sun, I credit their failure to recommend. My wife had a Saab with an oil change notification that would go off based on driving habit, and she expected that to happen on a Volvo as well. The engine was not dry and was showing just under a quart low when I got home. They may have been topping it off for all I know.
I have tried to source an engine, and have had zero luck other than a new long block, which is not worth buying. So I have a paperweight at the top of my driveway.
2 questions: anybody interested in a near perfect (for its age) V70T5 (minus a working engine), and has anybody had issues with near spontaneous failure of this engine? Trying to decide if there is anything I can hang my hat on to get the dealership to discuss why it failed or whether I part out/sell/donate.
Thanks
