V70 Transmission questions

I have a '99 XC with about 130K miles on it. The other day, I was driving backward about 100 ft, hit a bump, and lost reverse. It was literally like it shifted into neutral. I'm driving it still (just have to be careful where I go and where I park!) and it shifts fine otherwise. It does seem to "try" to reverse, almost like it won't quite engage. So I have two questions:
1. Since it happened so suddenly, it doesn't seem (to me anyway) that it would be a clutch... maybe a seal? or a sensor/ solenoid?
2. If I do have to replace the transmission, would a FWD tranny work? From what I've heard, it is just a matter of changing the RH axle shaft and tapping the LH mount hole. But I wanted to know if anyone has seen the two side by side...
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
