What to do with my tranny?

The car is a 2001 V70 2.4T (i'm not even sure if these came in stick in the states but mine is an auto)
The car has 105K on it. My father bought it at 60K and drove 90% highway driving until now.
I've just taken the car over and what I've noticed is what I think is referred to as the "flare". Shifting either between 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th( I think 2nd to 3rd) the rpm's surge for a second and it's like the car is in neutral. Then it grabs and it's back to business as usual.
Now: I am not sure if this tranny has ever been cracked open! In a perfect world someone did a 60K service right before my father bought it but as wel all know this is not a perfect world........ I am 100% sure it did not have a tranny service done while my father owned the car.
So..... my 2 choices seem to be:
1: Leave it alone until it grenades and then worry about it.........
2: Service the friggin thing and try to make it last as long as the engine.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.
