What should I buy
Hi, I am new to Volvo but have always liked the look. I am looking to purchase a V70 and wanted some input from the forums. I have found many useful articles in the forums but felt more confident started yet another post. Please dont hate me. Could you post your vote with a reply why you choose this model. I know I see a lot of negative posts about certain years, but what is the percentage of acutal bad ones compared to all of the good ones. I am leaning towards the 2001 V70 T5 only because I like the body. But reliability is a huge factor since this will be a daily driver. Thanks for the input.
It is all up to you really.
1. Do you want power?
2. Do you just want a nice car with no power.
Personally I would go with a 1998 V70R, T5 or Turbo model. Why 1998, they don't have the ETM.
1999+ models do.

DO NOT BUY AN 01
These are the worst cars on the planet.
It was a 1st year model and Volvo messed up, MANY issues including almost every transmission has failed (over 65%).
I sell Volvos and I will not buy an 01, no matter how cheap!
(I value my customers too much)

I know I should buy a older V70 pre 2001 I just love the looks of the newer body style. The 2002 are a little out of my price range. This is a second car a dd for me trying to keep the cost low. I know that probabbly means more miles, more problems. It seems like some of the 1998 glt's, t5's are the same cost as a 2001 with similar miles. Why is that.
Why do you think?
01's are POS's and no one wants them who knows anything about Volvos plusno dealer wants to deal with them and THEY (as a rule)don't buy them either
A GOOD Gen 1 Volvostill bringsdecent money, especially now as they're becoming old with many miles

Well I found a few 1998 T5's and a GLT. I found a great deal on a 2001 T5 but you guys got me scared. I also have found a few 98-00 R's, but man are they expensive. I am sure they are worth every penny. I know I can search but is there a huge difference between teh 98 T5 and the 98 GLT other than HP?
Well, I drive a 2001 V70 T5 and it's given me my fair share of problems and although I haven't driven or owned one of the previous model Volvos, I much rather prefer mine. No offense to anyone, but I think it looks way better inside and out and as for comfort, I can't see how anything can be as nice as this
. As for the list of problems I have had ...
1. engine torque mounts - replaced
2. suspension control arm bushes torn - still to be replaced, propably polyurethane ones.
3. radiator - replaced
4. turbo oil return lines - replaced
5. ATF flush - done, gearbox really smooth now.
6. drive shaft - done, only really needed to replace cv boot, but there was some play.
7. pcv - replaced, but only because I broke mine when trying to clean it.
All in I probably spent about $1100 (if you directly convert it, ZAR 9400)
Preferably I would like a 2005 V70R

The 98 GLT has 198 hp and the T5 has 222. The GLT I have does not have the trip computer either. I find it to be very responsive and fast enough, but when I compare it to my two 850 R's it's not as fast. But it is definitely fast enough. If I could find a T5 that would be my choice, but if you get a real good deal on a GLT it's a very good car, way better than the non turbo models. I would not turn down a very good deal on an 01 T5 either.
Aw gees, here we go again with misinformation [sm=shootshoot.gif]
MOST GLTs have the trip computer, its part of a package that most GLTs were ordered with.

Well taking adivice fromthose who have participated in this thread and I have been zeroing in on a 1998 V70 T5. It has about 85000 miles on it. Some of the recent fixes are brakes, tires, and rear main seal. But I still will take more input as this is not a final decision. The hunt continues. Thanks
What color is it? 85K on 98 T5 would be a great car to buy. Anything under about $6800 would be a fair price. The lower the better. I would recommend a prepurchase inspection by a certified Volvo mechanic. My son did that on the 98 S70 T5M he bought last week, and he got $500 off based on what the mechanic found. He had them take it to a dealer for the inspection. He brought it home and started fixing all the little things like motor mounts that were bad.

The color is Platinum Silver with black leather interior. The only problem now is that the wifedoesn't like the look of the older V70's. She likes the 2001 +. What the heck.

OK heres what I got. I have been looking at a 98 V70 T5 with 85000 miles, Its got a new main seal, brakes, some brake computer, some sort of pcv tube, loaded , platinum silver with black interior, no carfax service records. I am also looking at a 98 V70 R with 120000 miles loaded new timing belt, water pump, and carfax service records up 98000 miles then noting although the same owner till the end now at a dealer. With the R being more miles and AWD is this still a riskier purchase. Both are the same price. At least I am back to the 98's and not the 01's infear of way to many problems.
Both are decent cars and the big difference of course is the fact that the R has AWD. That's what my daughter in law drives and they have not had any problems with it. The question you have to answer yourself is whether or not you NEED the AWD? I live in Ohio and have never had any problems with just having FWD. If the snow gets so bad that I don't think I can make it, I wait for the roads to be cleared enough for me to drive. So last year I didn't drive for one day out of the year. To me AWD is just something else that can go wrong and cost more money to fix. When my son got theirs though he insisted on getting and R because they wanted AWD.
