Which year models to stay away from?
I'm in the market for my first Volvo, a 2001-2004 V70 T5 (would like to get a 04-07 V70 R but out of my price range), would like to know which year models to stay away from. I was reading reviews on Edmunds.com and the 2001 models seem to be notorious for transmission problems, so let me know which ones to steer clear of.

I had a 2001 2.4T and had no problems with it. However, I have read that many do seem to have issues with the transmissions. My understanding is that some early 2002 are equipped with the same trans (don't mark my words on this), so I would suggest 2003 and up. T5 is deff a good choice, if you don't live in the hills stick with front wheel drive (unless you can score an R inexpensively) - much better on gas and also feels a lot lighter and is more fun to drive, from personal experience.

If you read the numerous threads here, you'll see a trend or pattern showing more complaints/issues with the '01 than other V70 model years. The automatic transmission is the big issue in terms of replacement cost (yeah -- replacement, not just repair). The 2001 was the first year for that body style. You can also check threads on the S60 which is the same chassis and powertrain as the V70 until its recent redesign. (V70 now S80 based).
The XC70 seems to have a few additional issues with its four wheel drive. Makes sense -- the more parts, the more that can go wrong.
Mine's an 06 V70 2.5t which we bought CPO used and its been just fine for the 30K we've put on it.
