Default 2014 XC60 - Brake maintenance

Hi All,

New here.

Had a hell of a time swapping the wife's rear brake pads. When removing the electronic brake module from the caliper I stripped the torx 30 screw. Finally ended up getting that off (was not easy) and when prepping the cylinder to be compressed I rotated the wrong way and completely unscrewed the cylinder, dumping all of the fluid out. I put it back on without issue. Put everything back together but didn't tighten down the rounded off T30 bolt so the electronic module didn't seal all the way.
I learned from my mistakes and the other side was uneventful.

Got the wheels back on and, according to the youtube video I was following, reset the electronic parking brake by alternating engaging the parking brake, pumping the brakes and releasing the parking brake. Did that 3 to 4 times and the car is now drivable but the wife notices that theres more play in the brake pedal and I'd like to get it back to normal. Also bled the brakes and ensured there was plenty of fluid. Planning on replacing the bolt today after work.

Is the spongy brakes a result of the fluid I dumped or the unseated electronic module?
How should I go about fixing this?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hello, sounds like what I am going thru now. I took off the EPB, backed the screw off all the way, but the cylinder will not compress. I have tried and no way it's going back in. I have a 2015 XC60. I am wondering if there is a hydraulic valve that prevents the fluid from moving back into the piston? I tried rotating the piston, that didn't seem to make a difference. Ideas?

OK, so I figured it out...thanks for the help here guys . Trick is to clean all the dirt and brake dust, spray some lubricant around the piston and line everything up nice and square and it goes in smoothly. I also used a brake caliper compression tool so it was perfectly square, the way I do it on my ford truck with a big clamp doesnt keep it as square enough.

Also, removing the EPB is a huge PIA. On the other site I just backed the brake off using the 12V jumper and hot wire the motor and that took 5 minutes...way easier. Make sure the caliper is still assembled when you do this or you could pop out the piston if you do it the wrong way.
