Check your owner's manual for towing guidelines- my 2012 is rated for 1650 pound trailer without trailer brakes and 3000 pound trailer weight with brakes. I have a Reese hitch with a 2" drawbar and tow a 1800 pound trailer okay but would not go much higher.

 

I happened to tow a trailer with XC60 when I was driving in France a year ago. I didn't face difficulties but frankly speaking, the trailer wasn't as big as usual ones. But yeah, the best option is to read manuals first.
