Question Attempting to splice into reverse light for reverse camera.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping somebody may be able to offer some advice. :-)

First of all my car: I have a 2014 Volvo XC60 2WD, 6-speed manual transmission D4.I’d thought i’d bite the bullet this morning and have a go at wiring the back cable up to the reverse wire. I wonder if anybody is able to shed some light as to the experience I’m getting.

Okay so, at the back I have located the reverse bulb, it seems to be the only clear bulb at the back behind the clear glass and I can see two wires coming from the bulb housing – a purple wire and a black wire. The black wire is also attached to another bulb housing too and so I believe that this would be the ground wire. Now, the purple wire joins a plug type harness and out of the back of the harness are two purple wires, both ultimately attached to the same ‘port’ (hole) at the other side of the plug harness, it is one of these wires that I have spliced into.

Now, what I’ve done is spliced in a 12 volt ‘filter’. I have spliced the “In” side of the 12 volt filter to the purple wire. The ‘out’ side of the filter I have attached a cable that runs all the way to the front and is connected to the camera power cable.

This is where it gets a little odd. It seems that the camera mode switches on, no matter which gear the car is in, but and this might give you a clue (hopefully) as to where I might have gone wrong – but – really oddly, as soon as the car starts to move, either forward or backwards, the camera goes off, but as soon as i’m at a standstill again the camera then switches on again.

This graphic shows a brown bulb housing which I believe to be the reverse lamp (note the purple cable and the harness plug it routes into)

Note the two purple cables coming from the other side of the wiring harness and this is where i’ve spliced – as you can see i’ve spliced through and taped up with insulating tape)

And this graphic shows the 12v filter I’ve used, the ‘out’ end you can see is where it runs all the way to the front and is connected to camera power:

Clearly I have gone wrong somewhere but, where I don't know. Please note that I have no multimeter or testing tools or anything like that and so I'm literally doing everything by sight and logic - (or at least trying to! ha) - thankyou

Thanks but, that is not the question I asked. I am not a mechanic or an electrical engineer. I wouldn't know how to use one.

If anybody else is able to provide me with a more helpful answer I'd greatly appreciate it. - TIA.
