Default Check Engine Light (2010 T6)

My 2010 XC60 AWD T6 has 88,000 miles on it and had it's most recent dealer service at 83,000. The check engine light came on today. A call to a mechanic tells me it can be anything from a lose gas cap to a bad cat converter. He suggested that I add some additive to my fuel to see if that might clean the injectors and if that doesn't work, bring it in.

I'm only here to see if anyone else had this happen and what it ended up being (and cost).

thanks

Don't take it to whoever you called and told you that. They have no idea what they're talking about.

There is really no way to possibly tell without having the codes read.

I hear what you're saying and if it wasn't for him suggesting some of the possibilities I'd 10)% agree with you. I'm running over there today so he can actually hook it up and check the codes. This is my Porsche mechanic and I've found him to be spot on every time I bring my cars into him. After bringing the Volvo into the dealer since I bought the car I've decided to go elsewhere. Originally, I thought staying with the dealer ensured continuity with repairs and records but now I'm thinking it's not necessary and will cost less.

That said, when I brought it in for it's 85,000 mile check up (at 83,000) I got it back with the ESP light staying on for a few seconds after starting the car. They claim they did a software update and maybe that was part of it and if the light stayed on or blinked to bring it back. Could this be a part of the problem?

Well he is wrong with regard to the fuel additive. It will do nothing.

If that light does not stay on, there is no problem.

The check engine light went off. I tanked up with Chevron premium and added a gas treatment from Pep Boys. The light went off the next morning when I went to work. It hasn't been on since.

I guarantee you it has nothing to do with the gas or additive. The code will still be stored.

Your carbon canister was overwhelmed when you filled up. Perhaps when your nozzle clicked off, you filled until second click off.
When you drive for a few minutes after fill up and check engine light comes on, continue to drive and the light will go off as the canister purges itself.
