D4 2.0 FWD (Drive-E) 4 cylinder or D5 2.4 AWD 5 cylinder)
Good day. I've read some conflicting information (most likely due to my own lack of knowledge) about the D5 5 cylinder, 6 speed transmission, 2.4l AWD engine. I'm looking at purchasing a 2016 D5 with the following engine denomination: D5244T20
I have a number of questions on this engine please:
1.It appears to me that this engine still uses the older generation technology and is not a 'Drive E' engine?
2. This engine is derived from the 5 cylinder 2.4 Ford engine?
3. Assuming my first two points are correct, wouldn't Volvo's own automatic 2.0-litre 'Drive-E' D4 FWD (Engine code A8) unit be a better choice between the two? From what I've read, the 8 speed transmission is a noticeable upgrade from the 6 speed transmission and the 'Drive E' also introduced some significant power enhancements, making it feel 'punchier' than the D5 mentioned above (it's also important to note that only the FWD in the D4 is available where I live).
I was convinced that I want the D5 (mostly for the additional power and torque), but given what I said above (and assuming it's correct), I'm not so sure anymore. I'm not too bothered about having an AWD, but having a 'punchy' engine is important to me. The 2nd hand D5s are noticable more expensive than the D4s of the same year model and I'm really starting to wonder whether it's worth it (from both a performance and reliability perspective). Thanks in advance.
(This is the article that triggered some of the doubts I now have - https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/car-reviews/volvo/xc60/xc60-2014-2017/).
