The 2.9 update says you can “switch between Pilot Assist and Adaptive cruise Control with the left steering wheel buttons.”

Now that I have 2.9, the above statement confuses me.

First, it says “buttons,” plural, but I think there is only one button involved (the rightmost). Second, it seems to switch between Pilot assist and Lane Keeping Assist and have little or nothing to do with Adaptive Cruise Control which remains in effect no matter what you do with that button.

Can anyone enlighten me?

 

I would also like an explanation on this issue. Can the Pilot Assist be turned on without using Adaptive Cruise Control?

 

Despite my confusion over the quoted message, I have started to get used to Pilot Assist and the newly activated button, but I think this button is poorly described. Pilot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist work well but are described in a confusing manner.

SUGGESTED BUTTON DESCRIPTION: The button switches between Pilot Assist (PA) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). You can choose which is the default (PA or LKA) in the settings.

This is contrary to the description given by Volvo, which does not match that paradigm. Volvo should consider switching to the wording I give above.

BEHAVIOR: My understanding of the behavior is as follows: LKA lets you drift around in your lane and only kicks in (abruptly) when you get dangerously close to the edge of the lane. PA constantly (but gently) guides the car to the middle of the lane. This includes steering to follow a curving lane, which LKA does not attempt.

PA includes, and insists on, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). If PA is off, then you get to choose if you want ACC and/or LKA or neither.

ADVICE: PA does take some getting used to, but it is growing on me. Do you remember what it feels like when your wheels are out of alignment? The car wants to wander erratically left and right. That was my first impression of PA. I didn’t like it. Now I see that PA just has a different idea than I do of how to fine tune the steering and I am happier if I (mostly) trust its opinion and don’t try to overrule it as I would when wheel misalignment interfered with keeping the car in line.

My bottom line: Pilot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist work well but are described in a confusing manner.
