XC 60 Tires Feathering/Scalloping
I am the original owner of a 2015.5 XC60 T6 which still has the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires (255 45 20).These tires have approx 32k km (29k miles) on them. Winter tires - Michelin Alpins - now approx 15k km are installed every winter and removed for the Verdes every April. Both sets of tires are therefore rotated every year (front to rear/rear to front) by myself and torqued to spec.
During the summer of '20 I noticed the tires were making an unusual noise. Decided to ride it out & see if the winter Michelins made the same noise, but were perfectly quiet. Forward to April '21 with the switch over & rotation. Same noise but maybe a little worse. Tread measures 6/32. Feeling the tire tread surface reveals scalloping/feathering on all 4 tires.
Checks with several tire shops confirms the feathering. The car has never had an alignment and tracks straight. No steering wheel vibration & all balancing weights are in place. The car has been driven gently with potholes and curbs avoided. There is no indication of any problem with the suspension. I would like to replace the tires but want to get to the route of the problem first. Strange that the winter Michelins are perfect but the Pirellis are now basically scrap. There is no obvious mechanical problem with the car, so I wonder if these tires become faulty as they age. Any solutions/ideas would be much appreciated.

I had the same problem with my OEM tires after about 20,000 miles. Severe wear on the inside of the tires. Took car to get it aligned and it wasn't out of alignment at all. Garage didn't even charge for alignment only minimal fee to check settings. I do the summer/winter tire dance as well and never had any wear on the winter tires (still don't after 25,000 miles on snows). I blame it on bad tires (that was what garage said as well). I replaced summer tires with Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring tires (I have about 10,000 miles on them now). My local garage sells mostly Cooper tires. I've had a few sets of them on my truck and other vehicles. I've never had a problem with them.
