03 xc70 rear wheels hard to rotate
I am diagnosing no awd issue. Car up on Jack stands. All wheels off the ground. In drive front left spins, front right barely spins, rears don't spin. P shaft spins. In neutral rear wheels spin freely a few degrees then get hard to spin. This is not a brake or p brake issue. Drivers rear is harder to turn than passenger side, but still hard. P shaft does not turn when rears are turned manually.. Possibly no fluid in diff? haven't checked that yet. Haldex fuse is good. No codes on dash. Thanks.
If when in neutral, all wheels off the ground and engine off - you turn the driveshaft and a front wheel turns - the angle gear and coupler are ok. Your "left spinning faster than the right" is normal differential operation. There will be no power or direct connection from the driveshaft to the rear diff until the haldex clutch does that. And it is almost impossible to test that with the wheels off the ground.
DEM (diff electronic module) codes will not turn on a check engine light or show up anywhere other than on a compatible scan tool. That would be your next step. A common failure is the Haldex pump goes bad and fries the DEM. A good diagnostic flow chart is located here --

Thanks for your reply. Before I dive into haldex diagnosis I would like to understand why the rear wheels are so hard to rotate manually. I have eliminated brakes as the issue. CV axles rotate but p shaft does not while manually rear rotating wheels. P shaft rotates with car in drive with fronts spinning. I have not yet verified lube level in rear diff. 200,000 plus on odo I have been driving this over a year and have done no maintenance to drive train fluids. Thanks.
