2 probs i need help
I have been looking through this site but have not found what i am looking for
so here are a couple of questions i hope you can help me with
this is a 01 xc70
the sunroof has the worst rattle I have ever heard. when you shut the door when you drive around and its loud. it moves about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch up and down. I can't figure out where it is coming from or how to even get the glass out to see what is loose. any ideas?
also the check engine light is on. I don't have a reader but I went to autozone they said there is no code for it. the car makes pleanty of power and does not seem to hurt any performance on the car but I would like to get it fixed. there is a slight turbo lag from the car but I did not think it was that bad. some people said that this volvo was made to have no lag but this is less lag than any other turbo car i have ever driven.
any answers would REALLY help.
thanks

RE: 2 probs i need help
1.Either 1 of 2 or both are happening. 1.Metal support bar came unglued from the glass. 2.sunroof screws came loose. To access the screws tilt the sunroof up. Now becareful because the corigated panels are known to break. Where the panel meets the glass it just slide straight into clips. So pull back torwards the center of the car. Working it slowly and easily to try not to break it. Then you can fold it or compress it to see the screws. If you want to take it out it is kind of a pain but the bottom have pushes straight into a groove on the bottom part. But the plastic is kind of folded over so it locks. I use a small screwdriver between the aluminum and the panel and pry it up carefully. Then you can close the sunroof and make sure the glass is adjusted properly and tighten the screws. Then if you want to once all are tightened and everything is adjusted good remove the screws one at a time and put a drop of locktite on the screws so they won't come loose again.
2.Some scanners will not read the codes out of these cars. You will need to find one that can read the codes. You might end up going to the Dealer or a Volvo specialist to get them to read the codes.

RE: 2 probs i need help
ok i have taken the peicess off and got to the screws. i tried to tighten them but they were not that tight. so i removced the torx bolts and i found that the brackets are loose in the tracks themselves. is there anyway to tighten them. I don't see anything but a couple of rivets and some pins.
thanks again
thanks again

Sunroof rattle - When nothing else works
Okay - I have an 02 s60. Sunroof was rattling like crazy when shut only. It would not rattle when tilted up. WHen you pushed on the glass when closed, you could feel play in the mechanism. When you pushed on the glass when tilted, no play. All four bolts holding the glass on were TIGHT. No brackets were "unglued" or anything like that. I became convinced that the play in the system was simply related to worn rails or worn mechanism. I determined my only chance at avoiding major $$$$ to replace the rails was to loosen the 4 screws holding the glass to the mechanism that are behind the accordian things, move the rear of the glass to the lowest adjustment (toward the bottom of the car) and then drive with the tilt slightly actuated. The adjustment was to make the top of the glass match the roof when the tilt was slightly actuated.
Well, this did not work. when i finished, the ?(*&$#@! thing rattled in the slightly uptilted position. HOWEVER - it did NOT rattle in the fully down position!!!!! So now my rattle was fixed but the top of the glass was goofy relative to the top of the car. So I slowly started adjusting the glass upwards in the back, bringing it more even with the roof, hoping my rattle would not come back. i got it up to Volvo geek acceptable position with the roof, and PRAISE THE LORD - still no rattle!!!!!!!! BLESSED SILENCE on craterfilled minnesota roads on my thin as paris hilton 50 series tires.
So when all the usual forum fixes DO NOT FIX YOUR RATTLE, start playing with the attitude of your glass until your test drive is rattle-less.
A new glass gasket ($1XX from Volvo) or a new glass ($6XX from volvo) would probably reduce the amount of FINESSE you need to accomplish this fix. If anyone knows where to get these cheap, i would like to know.
