Auto Transmission Probs:::
Hello all:
I am having a problem on my 1990 245 DL-- shifting from 3rd into 4th and then to overdrive. The car seems to rev up too high in 3rd (45mph) and then finally shift into 4th...Overdrive usually changes into gear around 60-65mph..It seems like the car doesnt know what to do with these 2 gears..
Any ideas of what the prob may be?
Thanks::
CH

How is the fluid level and color?Has the fluid been changed lately?You might want to have a trans shop look at it.If you take it to a dealer they will sell a fluid change then if that doesnt work they will sell you a trans.Volvo dealer ships dont rebuild transmissions they just replace.

One other thing i forgot to mention is check the adjustment on the kick down cable and make sure its not frozen.The kick down cable should be straight not to tight and not so loose that is saggs.Pull on the cable and make sure it releases it should come up about 1 1/2 to 2 inches.Good luck

Thanks for that information!! I checked the trans fluid (with the engine running, correct?) and it seems to be full, but it is a brownish color. Sort of like chocolate brown. I just bought this wagon...so I'm not sure what exactly has been done?
That is good advise about the kick down cable...is that the cable on the drivers side under the hood on top of the engine that has a small wheel attached?? I'm not sure where the kick down is.
As for the fluid...I will have that all checked out!
Thanks again:

The fluid sounds a little burnt.I would have it changed.Yes the kick down cable is on the wheel on the drivers side if you follow the cables back the kick down is the one that is on a bracket with 2 13mm nuts pinching on the bracket.You just loosen one of them then adjust the nuts to tighten or loosen the cable. Good luck
Let me know how you make out.
