Can you tow a 2002 v70xc 2.4t awd with blown tranny
I have never towed a volvo before and I am going to purchase a 02 v70xc with 117k miles for the engine for 400$ I have a tow lined up for it but Im wondering if a blown tranny could possibly cause it not to go into neutral with the specific switch for towing/ I guess worst comes to worst they just winch it up but I do not want to rip up the yard of the persom I am buying it from. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated I am towning this car on saturday the 8th.
really depends on how far you are towing. Volvo recommends not towing an AWD to avoid tranny damage but suggests if you must do, keep it under 45 mph and under 30 miles. If you are just going to pull the car from a parking spot, or going a short distance at low speed, that should not be an issue.
Is it stuck in park? If you can shift into neutral the car should roll. usually transmissions fail because of the solenoids in the valve body (which reroute the fluid to engage the gears) or because the clutche plates fry (allowing for slippage). Also most all wheel drive cars are actually front wheel drive until the center differential is engaged so worst case is one of the fronts may be grabbing but the other three will turn. Do a test to see if it will go into neutral and roll. otherwise the tow company may resort to using a dolly to skid the car onto the flatbed.
I cannot test it since I am buying the car I dont have time to go over there and do it, but worst case would a tow company just drag it onto the truck? I am buying it for the engine anyways and the trans is already junk so I am not worried about breaking anything there.
